WiFi for a Multi-Tenanted Property – Case Study

The property consists of over 35 residencies with multiple rooms. Unlike public WiFi or Event WiFi, the requirement is to provide a consistent high level of bandwidth to support multiple devices across all hours, over 24/7.
The current level of WiFi at The Forum was causing many problems, resulting a high level of complaints and poor experience for all tenants.
Understanding Tenants Requirements
Multi-tenant offices and residential properties compete for tenants across the sector. Tenants and users depend heavily on internet connectivity.
In today’s connected world it’s a primary requirement both inside and outside of work, and is highly popular for socialising. Key is providing quality and reliable services such as WiFi to attract, retaining and delight tenants.
In order to decide the level of WiFi service and internet connectivity which needed to be provided at The Forum, it became clear that a fuller picture was needed of what the users’ problems were being experienced, what their expectations were, and when and how they needed to use the internet.
Survey of Tenants, Monitor and Measure
Novahub put together and carried out an on-line survey with all tenants, with a range of questions to help understand user’s needs and expectations.
Collating and presenting the results gave a clear picture of what mattered, and helped justify and build the case for the level of WiFi and infrastructure needed.
Novahub implemented detailed monitoring of the existing WiFi performance, collating and analysing network data and usage stats.
The degree of usage across the property had clearly led to heavy congestion and bottlenecks, resulting in slow and dropping WiFi connectivity.
Increased Demand on the WiFi Services
The emerging patterns of behaviour showed how WiFi usage had increased significantly since the original system was implemented.
This was largely driven by changes in behaviour such as greater working from home, use of online video call meetings, increase use of study and online courses from home.
High adoption of social media, and use of online entertainment services such as Netflix, Amazon and gaming had all driven further demand.
Translation Demand into a Wifi Solution
Novahub were then able to translate these requirements into a WiFi solution. This defined the WiFi coverage needed, how to provide access to the WiFi (on-boarding) and the level of bandwidth needed.
WiFi Access Points were upgraded to provide additional frequency bands and more efficient bandwidth efficiency. The internet connection was upgraded to 1Gbps.
By controlling and co-ordinating the WiFi across the site, the use of too many separate WiFi networks was minimised, further improving bandwidth efficiency.
